MAINTENANCE WORKER I - CITY OF GLENS FALLS
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves assisting in the maintenance and repair of water distribution and sewer systems in a city. This title differs from the Maintenance Worker II title in that through training and experience the Maintenance Worker I act as crew chief, operates heavy equipment and assists in planning of required equipment for projects. The work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor with leeway for independent judgment in accordance with defined policies and procedures. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Operates sewer cleaning and maintenance equipment including sewer jetter trucks, and sewer/catch basin vacuum truck, sewer rodders, backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks and other related equipment as required;
Assists or may lead crews in installation for catch basins, drop inlets;
Assists water and sewer main lines and service laterals;
Investigates complaints regarding obstructed sanitary and storm sewers and potential water leaks and initiates corrective action as required;
Assists or may lead in the enforcement of proper safety practices involved in the performance of assigned tasks;
Repairs storm and wastewater lines;
Inspects, cleans and removes obstructions from sanitary and storm sewers;
May use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, picks, axes, etc. in performance of duties;
Inventories tools, supplies and equipment;
Assists in advanced planning for availability of required tools, equipment and materials as required for assigned tasks;
Performs related assigned duties as required for the operation of the facility.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:
Good knowledge of maintenance and construction activities including tools, terminology, and equipment used in the operation of a municipal water distribution and sewer system;
Good knowledge of the safety precautions involved in the work;
Ability to perform construction and repair work ordinarily required in the operation of a water distribution and sewer system;
Ability to supervise and work with others;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Dependability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of drainage, facilities, storm sewers, wastewater, water systems and their appurtenance facilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a CDL at the time of appointment.
