    The Warren County Public Defender’s Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Legal Clerk. This position’s primary responsibility is to answer phone calls received during business hours, route them appropriately, ensure messages get accurately recorded and relayed to office employees, and to check all office voicemails left off-hours. The Legal Clerk also performs a variety of clerical assignments, including reviewing, scanning, processing, and indexing legal documents, utilizing a computerized case management software database. The clerk is expected to independently perform duties in accordance with a prescribed set of office policies and procedures, for which all necessary training will be provided. Supervisors will be available for consultation, and to provide instruction on new or difficult tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher-level support staff team members, but the position reports directly to the Chief Public Defender or First Assistant Public Defender. There is opportunity for growth in this position, including potential promotion to higher level Legal Clerk positions if warranted. Does related work as required.

    SALARY: $43,495 (2026 Base Salary)

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    (a)Possession of Associate’s Degree or higher; OR
    (b)Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years of full-time, paid clerical experience, which shall have included the use of computer applications and other automated systems as a major function of the job.

    RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of Warren County or a contiguous county (Essex, Hamilton, Saratoga, Washington).

    The position will be filled based upon Civil Service requirements. A provisional appointment will be made with an exam to be held at a later date. Candidate must meet Civil Service requirements for appointment following the establishment of the Eligible List.
