YMCA TOGETHERHOOD Team commits to ‘Nourishing Neighbors’
    Together We Do More!
GLENS FALLS, November 27, 2018 - The FAMILY YMCA OF THE GLENS FALLS AREA recognizes November as a time of gratitude and giving back. A group of YMCA members did just that through the “Nourishing Our Neighbors” project. The project is part of a volunteer-run committee called Togetherhood™, a national initiative from the YMCA of the USA which the Glens Falls YMCA offers.
Days before Thanksgiving, the Togetherhood™ team assisted multiple families that not only would miss out on a holiday meal, but who often ration food in order to make ends meet. The committee recognized food access as a community need and provided Thanksgiving meals to identified local families.
Lisa Higley, Togetherhood™ Committee Chair, shared that she wanted to get involved with this committee because of her long-time association with the Tri-County United Way and recognizing the immense need in our region. She added, “If I am able to help in any way, I want to do that.  I am so grateful to help with Thanksgiving meals.  Many families are not able to enjoy the holidays because it a huge financial stress. Delivering these meals will bring them some sort of comfort and allow them to just enjoy their time together.”
Togetherhood™ was created to strengthen communities by allowing Y members to lead and run rewarding service projects as part of the Y member experience. By bringing people together in service to their neighborhoods, Togetherhood™ is designed to build both individual and community well-being. Members work as a committee in partnership with their Y to select, plan and run projects outside the Y that benefit the people and organizations in their community.
The Togetherhood™ Committee is hoping to carry out one project per quarter over the next year. “This team is very passionate about strengthening our community. They are already looking forward to the winter project that involves assisting new/young mothers and their babies. Supporting the overall well-being of families and making a positive impact in our community is a cornerstone of the YMCA”, says Kristen Flynn, Strategic Initiatives Coordinator and Committee Staff Advisor.
