Skiing at Double H Ranch

Skiing at Double H Ranch

It’s never too late to Sponsor a Winter Student dealing with a chronic or life-threatening illness

Thanks to a dedicated facilities team and a dose of magic, yes, we’ve got snow! And it’s shaping up to be the ‘best winter ever’ for the students, families and volunteers taking part in the 14th season of the Adaptive Winter Sports Program at the Double H Ranch.

With a record number of more than150 ski/snowboard instructors, National Ski Patrol volunteers, and many new local students and families donning skis for the first time, the magic continues on the slopes. The addition of a conveyor lift this year enhances the safety and adds to the fun for beginner students. Lisa, mom of Anthony and Brandon, notes that her boys have been counting down to their ski and snowboard days at the Double H Ranch since last July! (more…)

Little Things Mean a Lot

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

(from L): Donna Seymour, Linda Smith, Rick Van Lint

There is a great deal of truth in Kitty Kallen’s 1954 hit, “Little Things Mean a Lot“, as was demonstrated yesterday by two of our benevolent Chamber members.

Allow me to set the stage. The Chamber held its monthly networking luncheon yesterday at Sweet Basil in Queensbury (delicious, fresh food by the way – thank you, J.J. and crew!) The tradition at Chamber networking luncheons is to randomly select individuals by luck of the draw, and invite them to the podium to give a brief “commercial” about themselves and their company.

Typically, luncheon attendees share a few words about the nature of their business, noting specialties and unique offerings, often describing ‘who’ would most benefit from their products or services. Yesterday, we had the privilege to hear from Linda Smith, Annual Giving Communications Coordinator at the Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne. For those not familiar, Double H is a summer camp for children with life-threatening illnesses — and as you can surmise, is very near-n-dear to the hearts of  many. Linda shared that the first step to sponsoring a child for his or her morning at camp is $125.

When Donna Seymour, Business Development Representative at Stewart Title Insurance Company, Capital District was called to the podium, she used her minute to pitch by proclaiming, “I’m in! I’m going to sponsor a child for a morning at Double H. Who wants to split it with me?”

Rick Van Lint, President of Express Computer Restore in Hudson Falls was quick to volunteer. In just 60 seconds, these two individuals changed the outlook of a child, who would otherwise not be attending summer camp. Because of their generosity, a child will enjoy a morning at Double H, free from the fears and worries they are shackled with on a daily basis.

LEARN MORE about how you can sponsor a child’s morning at camp, call them at 518-696-5676, or stop by the Ranch at 97 Hidden Valley Road in Lake Luzerne.

It only takes a minute to change a child’s life.
…gotta minute?

Community Prayer Walk (Sat, May 21)

Friday, May 20th, 2011

There will be a community wide Prayer Walk tomorrow, Saturday, May 21, from 9:00am to 1:00pm in South Glens Falls. There will be two routes:
(1) The first will start at Oliver Winch Middle School and proceed to Coopers Cave Park
(2) The second (and longer) route will begin at South Glens Falls High School on Merritt Road and will also conclude at the park.
We will then unite for a brief message & prayer.

This walk is open to everyone from the Adirondack Region.  Everyone has been touched by the tragic losses among the younger generation in our communities.  South Glens Falls in particular has suffered a long series of difficult circumstances.  Town and School officials have been working very diligently to do everything in their power to offer help and support for the entire community.  Many believe that it’s time to reach out to a higher authority, to cry out for strength, protection, encouragement and a renewed spirit for this region. Please join the walk on Saturday morning.  Gather together with others to pray for a new season in the Adirondacks.

Please register for the walk on the Adirondack Churches Together website at www.adkchurches.com. Registrants will choose which route they wish to walk and should meet at their chosen starting point at 9:00am on Saturday Morning.  There is also a need for intercessors, so those who are physically unable to participate in the walk are still desperately needed.

Please register today. Additional questions may be directed to Jen Miner at (518) 232-6187 or jen@cotk.net.

Summer Camp for Children with Life-Threatening Illnesses

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Approaching its’ 19th summer, The Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne, NY is seeking individuals, organizations and businesses to sponsor a camper’s week at summer camp. If you’re not familiar with The Double H Ranch… they provide specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families, who are dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Something most of us cannot even begin to fathom. The children participate in camp experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound.

Says one camper, “There’s a totally different feeling as you pull onto Hidden Valley and go down the winding road toward camp. There’s a difference in the air. I wish there was more than one week”.

All programs at The Double H Ranch are FREE of charge to these young campers and their families. The Summer Residential Camp program hosts 900 campers, seventy percent who hail from New York State. Because of a medical diagnosis, these children are unable to attend other summer camps so this is truly an opportunity of a lifetime.

Says one mom, ”As a mom it’s awesome to have such a safe place for our kids to go. I can honestly say without Double H, my kids would have never experienced all the great joys of summer camp.”

This year, the Association of Hole in the Walls Camps, the organization Paul Newman set in place to continue his legacy and support his growing international family of camps, has presented the Double H with a new Challenge to raise $60,000 from people who sponsor a camper for the very first time, in return for a $20,000 grant.

Receive your Double H courage bracelet by taking a first step and sponsoring a child for his morning at camp ($125) or lead the way as a TrailGuide ($1,800) by sponsoring a child for her week at camp. In return, you will have the opportunity to spend time at camp and experience first-hand the impact of your gift. It’s a path you choose ― one morning, one week or anywhere in between. Your sponsorship gives a child new-found confidence and pride in sharing accomplishments with their peers and fosters a sense of belonging that will last a lifetime.

For more information on sponsoring a Double H camper, call 518-696-5921 or go to www.doublehranch.org.
