Dan Burke

“The goodness of a person and of the society he or she lives in often comes down to very simple things and words found in the Scout Law. Every society depends on trust and loyalty, on courtesy and kindness, on bravery and reverence. These are the values of Scouting, and these are the values of Americans.”

These are the words of former President George W. Bush that are the epitome of what scouts have always believed in – that Scouting is the foundation of goodness in one’s life.

Chris Scoville to Receive 2011 Henry Crandall Award

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Chris Scoville

The Crandall Public Library Board of Trustees and Director are pleased to announce the recipient of the second annual Henry Crandall Award.  Christopher H. Scoville, owner of Scoville Jewelers in Glens Falls, was selected from ten worthy nominees by the Library Board of Trustees for his many years of commitment to this community.  He was nominated by Scoville Jewelers employee Elizabeth Cassidy.  Chris will be honored at a reception on Friday, October 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Inn at Erlowest in Lake George.

A long-time Glens Falls resident, Chris has remained actively dedicated to the improvement of this region for more than 35 years.  Since the 1970s, Chris has tirelessly served in many capacities, including as co-founder of the Glens Falls Farmers Market and Glens Falls Action Committee, member of the Glens Falls Civic Center Committee and Hyde Collection board, former president of the Downtown Business Association and the Glens Falls Common Council, and past board president of the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council and the Chapman Historical Museum.  Chris’s work on behalf of the arts earned him the 1992 Dedication Award from the NYS Council on the Arts.  In his current role as board member of the Glens Falls Business Improvement District, Chris was instrumental in the City Park restoration project and continues to lead volunteer efforts to keep the park beautiful.  As a result of the generosity, perseverance, and business acumen of Mr. Scoville and his wife Debra Vales, Scoville Jewelers has become one of the most prominent and lasting downtown retailers. The store was recognized with the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Best Small Business Award and The Hyde Collection’s 2006 Corporate Leadership Award.  Throughout his lifetime Chris Scoville has unselfishly given time, talents, and funds in support of dozens of local charities.  Chris follows the Library’s first Henry Crandall Award honoree, Richard “Dick” Bartlett, principal in the Bartlett, Pontiff, Stewart, and Rhodes, P.C. law firm.

Chris has been equally supportive of Crandall Public Library over the years, involved early on in the Library’s expansion and renovation plans.  Chris was a valued member of the Library’s 2010 Community Planning Committee, which helped to define the Library’s priorities for the next three years.  Scoville Jeweler’s backing of the Love Your Library Raffle has been a key factor in the success of this annual Library fundraiser, now in its second year.

In response to the news that he was chosen, Scoville commented, “Henry Crandall was a great man. Dick Bartlett, the first Henry Crandall Award recipient, is a remarkable man who spent his life doing good for his community.  I am overwhelmed to be honored with this award.”

According to the criteria for the Henry Crandall Award, the recipient will be a person who has affected the improvement of the community, demonstrated commitment to the Library, resided within the Southern Adirondack Library System service area of Warren, Washington, Saratoga & Hamilton Counties, and reflects the values of Library founder Henry Crandall: generosity, perseverance, loyalty, compassion, civic pride, and philanthropy.  Current Library Trustees, staff, and Friends board members are not eligible.

“Chris is incredibly dedicated to our community,” stated Library Director Christine McDonald. “When he sees an issue that needs to be resolved or an opportunity for growth, he does not sit back and watch – he gets involved.  Many times when I’ve walked in City Park during the past few summers I’ve seen Chris tending to the flower beds himself.  Like Henry Crandall so long ago, Chris’s contributions to the region are lasting.  With his seemingly limitless ideas and energy, he is a role model to everyone who cherishes our community.  His business, like the Library, has been an anchor.  We are honored to present the 2011 Henry Crandall Award to Christopher Scoville.”

Chris will be recognized and presented with his award at a special reception on Friday, October 28, 2011, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Inn at Erlowest in Lake George.  Light fare, an open beer and wine bar, and musical entertainment will be offered for $75 per person.  The event is open to the public.  Business sponsorships of the event are available, ranging from $100 to $1,000.  For more information or to make a reservation for the Henry Crandall Award Reception, VISIT THE WEBSITE or call 792-6508, ext. 285.  Reception proceeds benefit Crandall Public Library programs and services.

Local Chefs Win Taste of Albany Competition

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Chefs representing the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center shared first place in the annual “A Taste of Albany” fundraiser, which benefits the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless. The other co-winners were from 677 Prime in Albany.

Executive Chef Anthony Teta and Chef Melissa Doney represented the Fort William Henry at the event, which took place on May 12th on the Terrace Gallery of the State Museum in Albany. Over 40 prestigious Capital District restaurants participated, helping to raise over $75,000 to fight homelessness.

Attendees of the event voted by “blind taste” for their favorites entries from the top restaurants within 100 miles of the Capital Region, including Yono’s, Central Steak and Grappa 72.

“It’s a great event and a real honor to be recognized among all of these extraordinary chefs,” said Teta, who has been working with the Fort William Henry for over 5 years.

Doney is no stranger to culinary competition. She was a contestant in Season 8 of the Fox television show, “Hell’s Kitchen” featuring celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

“We are so proud of Tony and Melissa,” said Robert Flacke Sr., President of the Fort William Henry Corporation. “Our guests are well aware of their significant culinary skills and now the Albany community has also been given the heads up that a trip up North will be well worth it.”

Albany’s Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless is a co-ed homeless shelter that has been serving the community for 26 years. More information on the group can be found by VISITING THEIR WEBSITE.

Jerry Jenkins to Receive Adirondack Museum Award

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Jerry Jenkins, recipient of the 2011 Harold K. Hochschild Award

The Board of Trustees of the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, New York is pleased to announce the selection of Jerry Jenkins as the recipient of the 2011 Harold K. Hochschild Award.

The Harold K. Hochschild Award is dedicated to the memory of the museum’s founder, whose passion for the Adirondacks, its people, and environment inspired the creation of the Adirondack Museum.  Since 1990 the museum has presented the award to a wide range of intellectual and community leaders throughout the Adirondack Park, highlighting their contributions to the region’s culture and quality of life.

The Adirondack Museum will formally present Jerry Jenkins with the Harold K. Hochschild Award on August 4, 2011.

Jerry Jenkins is an ecologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Program (WCS).  An accomplished botanist, naturalist and geographer, he has almost forty years of field experience working in the Northern Forest. Over the course of his career, his work has included conducting biological inventories for The Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, surveying rare plant occurrences for the State of Vermont, chronicling the environmental history of acid rain with the Adirondack Lakes Survey Corporation, and understanding and interpreting historical changes to boreal lowland areas in the Adirondacks with WCS. His enthusiasm for natural history has also led him to study plant diversity and distribution across various forest types – from the Champlain Hills to large working forest easements, and from old growth forests to high elevation alpine communities.

"Climate Change in the Adirondacks: The Path to Sustainability" by Jerry Jenkins

His most recent and notable accomplishments with the Wildlife Conservation Society are his collection of Adirondack publications. Together with Andy Keal, Jerry Jenkins co-authored The Adirondack Atlas a Geographic Portrait of the Adirondack Park, perhaps the most significant Adirondack book in a generation.  Some 300 pages in length, the Adirondack Atlas contains 750 maps and graphics, and represents the most comprehensive collection of regional data brought together in a single source. The park’s geology, flora and fauna are featured, as well as the history and the dynamic nature of the park’s human communities. Bill McKibben describes the atlas as a “great gift…that marks a coming of age.”

In his newest book Climate Change in the Adirondacks the Path to Sustainability, Jenkins demonstrates how climate change is already shifting the region’s culture, biology and economy, and provides a road map towards a more responsible and sustainable future.  He provides the first comprehensive look at both the impacts of, and the potential solutions to, climate change across the Adirondack region.  This compilation, along with his other regional contributions, prompted Bill McKibben to offer that “Jerry Jenkins has emerged as the information source for our mountains…and we are all in his debt.”

Adirondack Winery Adds Two Gold Medal Wins at Tasters Guild International Wine Competition

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Blackberry Sunset Merlot

Adirondack Winery is proud to announce that four more of its wines can be counted amongst its growing list of award winning wines. At the recently held 24th Annual Tasters Guild International Competition, Adirondack Winery’s Amethyst Sunset (Blackberry Merlot) and Prospect Mountain White (Peach Chardonnay) were awarded Gold Medals; while its Winter Concerto (White Chocolate Port) won Silver and Muscat took home Bronze.

Tasters Guild International is a Wine and Food Appreciation Society based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This year’s wine competition brought 30 experienced wine industry experts together to judge the wines submitted from all over the world. “We are particularly pleased to have earned gold medals at this competition, as we only entered four wines and this was an International competition, where our wines were judged alongside 1,847 wines entered by 335 wineries from 11 countries,” said Adirondack Winery President, Sasha Pardy.

With this latest competition, Adirondack Winery is proud to say that 22 of its wines have earned 39 medals at International wine competitions; which now includes four gold medal-winning wines. Adirondack Winery’s Pinot Grigio and Semillon wines recently earned Gold medals at the 2011 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, which was held March 26, 2011.

To create these wines, Michael Pardy, Adirondack Winery’s CEO and wine maker, sources high quality grape must from California. The wines are crafted in stainless steel tanks at the Pardy’s newly relocated and expanded wine making facility in Queensbury. The Gold medal-winning Amethyst Sunset is a semi-sweet, light-bodied Merlot infused with blackberry. The Prospect Mountain White is a light, semi-sweet Chardonnay infused with Peach. Both wines are among the most popular on their entire wine list.

The wine labels on these award winning wines were created by Sasha Pardy and feature photographs of landscapes and landmarks of the local region. The Amethyst Sunset (Blackberry Merlot) label features the sun setting at the close of the Adirondack Balloon Festival. The Prospect Mountain White (Peach Chardonnay) boasts an exceptional view of Lake George taken from Prospect Mountain.
