The Adirondack Region has a diverse economy economy which is given seasonal boosts by the arrival of summer tourists and winter sports enthusiasts. In Warren County, lumber, limestone, black marble, garnets, tanning and water power formed an early industrial base from which the economy has grown. The paper, lime and cement industries stimulated further growth and enhanced the diversity that characterizes the industrial community today.
Warren, Washington and northern Saratoga Counties are especially noted for medical device manufacturing. An estimated 30% of the catheter products used worldwide are manufactured in this area. Among the largest employers are several medical device and sterilization companies, which have given the region its nickname, "Catheter Valley".
Finance, insurance, manufacturing, services and tourism are the major employers in the region. In the greater Glens Falls area alone, more than 63,000 people are employed in approximately 65 different industries, including furniture, medical devices, printing, textiles, technology, and pulp and paper equipment. Papermaking and related industries employ nearly 2,000 residents. The region's largest employer is Glens Falls Hospital which recently completed a $65 million expansion.
Prospective employers investigating this region have been impressed by the skills and work ethic of our labor pool. According to the New York State Department of Labor, the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area set a record for the strongest job growth of any metropolitan area in the state in 2007. At 2.9 percent, it was higher than the national average. Much of the new employment figures are based on population growth as people are moving to the region in search of jobs and an outstanding quality of life.
The area has a long history of welcoming and nurturing entrepreneurs. Warren and Washington Counties' Employment and Training, Warren- Saratoga-Washington-Hamilton Essex Board of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES), Adirondack Community College and ARCC all provide employee training and professional development opportunities for area businesses. In addition, the chamber's Adirondack Business and School Partnership with local learning institutions and industries is working to create more and better training and employment opportunities for the area's young people.
The New York State Department of Labor maintains a high profile in the region. They are especially sensitive to the employment needs of veterans and offer programs such as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) which provides tax savings to qualified companies that hire veterans. Industrial and economic development services are available on a local, county and regional basis.
Together, the five counties make up an important agricultural area which supports dairy and horse farms, greenhouses, nurseries and sawmills. Dairy farming is a leading industry in Washington County where other enterprises such as apple growing, maple sugar production and truck farming play a vital role.
Weekly Farmers' Markets are held in Glens Falls and surrounding communities from May through November. Outstanding local produce is readily available in area grocery stores and restaurants. Agriculture contributes some $170 million to the region's economy each year.
