Education in the Adirondacks

Kids in a ClassroomWith small class sizes, highly skilled and talented teaching professionals, and a proven tradition of high academic standards, the Warren and Washington Counties region of New York's Tech Valley is fast becoming a very popular destination for families with school aged children. A June 2004 Report to the Governor, for example, finds that over 80% of students graduating from high school in Warren and Washington Counties go on to further their educations in a post-secondary college or university. This same report further documents that the region's pupil/teacher ratio is consistently better than 13 to one.

Through the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), the region's school districts have further enhanced their capacity to provide local students with access to a range of sophisticated career and technical education programs as well. For students interested in a career in health care, engineering or the theater arts especially, the BOCES offers a "New Visions" program designed to help college-bound high school seniors gain valuable experience and knowledge. While admission into the New Visions program is competitive and highly selective, the BOCES provides a range of additional technical and enrichment courses in land conservation, CISCO networking, criminal justice, culinary arts, electronic imaging, graphic and visual communication, machine tool technology, and much more. The BOCES website contains a wealth of information about the many programs offered through this cooperative educational system established to meet the shared needs of the region's students, educators and school districts. While visiting this website, you can also learn more about job openings for teachers and other educators in the region's school districts.

The region's public schools provide a full range of educational programs and services. Throughout the region, these local school districts have a proven track record of success academically along with a genuine commitment to offering students a complete education with extracurricular activities including but not limited to: interscholastic sports, choruses, orchestras, speech, debate and drama, and unique opportunities for volunteering. To further evaluate each school district's performance, the New York State Department of Education publishes an annual school-by-school report that can be accessed online at www.emsc.nysed.gov.

The Adirondack Region is served by several private and parochial schools. St. Mary-St. Alphonsus Regional Catholic School in Glens Falls has a 130-year tradition of educational excellence. The school provides both pre-school and kindergarten though 8th grade curricula. The UCP Prospect Child and Family Center in Queensbury is a fully accredited educational facility that offers multi-faceted services for at-risk and developmentally disabled individuals. The Center for Educational Programs at Prospect School includes part and full-time classes for children ages two to 21.

The Family YMCA of Glens Falls hosts a variety of pre- and after school, educational fitness programs, and summer camps. Warren County Head Start in Glens Falls serves pre-schoolers. Private pre-school and day care centers flourish by offering exceptional care and programs. The Northeast Parent and Child Society offers resource and referral information.

The quality and variety of educational opportunities for children and adults is just one of many reasons why so many people choose to call the North Country home. For a complete list of ARCC member school districts, access Membership Search/Schools/Secondary & Elementary at left.
