Healthcare Facilities and Insurance in the Southern Adirondacks

At the center of this widespread health care network is Glens Falls Hospital, the third largest hospital in the Capital Region, and the largest and most comprehensive health care provider north of Albany. The 410-bed community hospital serves the residents of six surrounding counties. It is the major provider of acute care services for residents within a 3,000 square-mile area. With over 3,000 employees and a medical staff of approximately 300 physicians, Glens Falls Hospital is also the region's largest employer.

Glens Falls HospitalInpatient services include a 24-hour ER (The Sheridan Emergency Care Center), medical/surgical and intensive care, coronary (The Juckett Family Cardio-vascular Center, which includes coronary angioplasty services), gynecological, obstetrical, Oncology (The C.R. Wood Cancer Center - the region's only accredited cancer center) pediatric and psychiatric care. Outpatient services offered are ambulatory surgery, renal dialysis, diabetes treatment, an integrated cancer treatment program, and a continuum of behavioral health services including substance abuse rehabilitation. With more than 750 volunteers in six branches, the Glens Falls Hospital Guild is one of the largest hospital auxiliaries in New York State. The hospital also has a very active Glens Falls Hospital Foundation which was vital in securing funds for the recently completed $65 million expansion. The Hospital also offers additional primary care services through its satellite health centers in Cambridge, Whitehall, Granville, Greenwich, Hoosick Falls, Salem, and Wilton.

Glens Falls Hospital accepts all insurance plans, regardless of whether or not they have a direct contract with the provider.

Health insurance in the region is available through MVP Health Care, Capital District Physicians' Health Plan, Blue Shield of Northeastern New York/Health Now, AFLAC New York and Fidelis Care.

Hudson Headwaters Health Network provides primary care at 12 locations covering 3,700 square miles of the Adirondack/Lake George and Metropolitan Glens Falls area. The Network serves all of Warren County and parts of Essex, Hamilton, Saratoga and Washington Counties. A not-for-profit Federally Qualified Health Center, Hudson Headwaters accepts everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Last year, Hudson Headwaters received 230,000 patient visits. Primary care is provided by 41 physicians, board certified in their individual specialties, and 43 physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives.

In addition to primary care, Hudson Headwaters offers lab services, imaging (x-ray, mammography, ultrasound and bone density scanning), physical therapy, dentistry and selected specialty care including behavioral/mental health services, cardiology, gynecology/obstetrics, orthopedics, and podiatry. The Adirondacks are unique with respect to the number and variety of services available to children and adults with disabilities and their families. Formed in 1963, Community, Work & Independence, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization which today is an $11 million dollar business with over 300 employees. It serves more than 500 individuals with disabilities in Warren, Washington and northern Saratoga Counties. Other organizations include Prospect Child and Family Center, which meets the needs of younger disabled residents, Warren/Washington ARC, which is primarily a residential program for people with disabilities, and the Southern Adirondack Independent Living Center, whose services help to expand the personal horizons of the disabled.

The Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne is a camp for critically ill children. Created by The Great Escape fun park founder Charles R. Wood and actor/ philanthropist Paul Newman, the former Hidden Valley Ranch Resort offers a loving, healthy and fun-filled environment.
